HEALTH EDUCATOR – COMMUNITY

JOB SUMMARY:

This is a professional consultation and teaching position in public health education. Work involves responsibility for a city-wide health education program that meets the needs of staff, professional groups and the general public. It includes direct and indirect teaching; the preparation, selection, procurement and dissemination of health information; use of all mass media and visual aides; health education program direction and technical assistance to professionals and the general public. Work is performed with latitude for professional judgment and is reviewed through reports to and meetings with the Director of Health Services.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Confers with the Director of Health Services and staff of the Department of Human Services in the development and planning of health education programs and services concerning techniques and methods of public health education.
  • Develops, organizes, and conducts or participates in programs of staff education and in-service training designed to increase the competence of personnel of other agencies, schools and colleges.
  • Serves as advisor and coordinator of programs for professional and semi-professional organizations in the field of public health; often participates in these programs.
  • Plans, organizes, manages and participates in conferences, institutes, committees and other meetings for the promotion of public health education; represents Health Department at meetings as required by the Health Director.
  • Establishes and maintains reference files on sources of public health education materials for use by the staff of the Health Department and the community.
  • Supervises and prepares news releases, feature articles, radio programs and other publicity programs for the purpose of interpreting for the public the work and issues addressed by the Health Department.
  • Prepares reports, brochures and related materials on public health subjects; prepares grant applications.
  • Performs related work as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge/Skills:

Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills:

Thorough knowledge and understanding of the field of public health and thorough knowledge of health information and promotion techniques.

Ability to plan, implement and evaluate community health education programs and act as a resource person for the programs/activities of the entire staff of the Health Department.

Ability to develop creative concepts and innovative techniques to reach populations with appropriate and useful health information.

Maturity and tact in dealing with people.

Good communicative and public speaking ability.

Experience:

Three years experience, with increasing responsibility, in public health and related areas.

Education:

Graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in public health education or a closely related area.

Certification Preferred:

CHES preferred.
