The Executive Office of Public Affairs and Equity (OPAE) strives to advance health equity and develop communications, health promotion, and Education products that meet the needs of the communities we serve.
The Health Promotion and Education section uses health promotion theory, best practices, and effective communication strategies to improve health literacy and health behaviors of people in Washington. We assist the agency in strategic thinking and consistent messaging about preventing disease, promoting a healthy start in life, making healthy choices, and accessing services.
This position provides health education support across the agency by program request, and requires fluency in both English and Spanish. You'll manage health promotion and education projects and provide coaching, Plain Language/Plain Talk assistance, and recommendations to staff. This position provides technical assistance in developing and testing educational materials and planning and implementing health promotion interventions.
Some of what you’ll be doing:
- Develop health education materials, including health advisories, flyers, fact sheets, brochures, web content, and social media messages.
- Use behavior change theories in developing educational materials.
- Develop various health education and health messaging projects.
- Develop, promote, and evaluate the effectiveness of social marketing activities.
- Develop or revise materials that provide identified communities with information that encourages them to reduce their exposure to environmental health risks and contaminants.
- Assist program staff in writing and editing reports, proposals, and policy papers.
- Research and analyze health issues, affected populations, health education theory, and best practices for effective program strategies and interventions.
- Participate in the Office of Public Affairs and Equity's Spanish workgroup, perform limited translation or transcreation as approved by supervisor, provide health education duties in both English and Spanish, and help customers understand possible transcreation or cultural needs of their audiences.
The incumbent may be located anywhere within the State of Washington. Telework (mobile work) is currently expected. When approved, the incumbent will work with their supervisor to identify an appropriate work schedule and balance, including telework and reporting to the Tumwater, WA duty station for work activities as needed, such as occasional in-person meetings. This position may also need to attend activities in other locations within Washington for health education activities within the community, such as listening sessions or health events.

Required Qualifications
Option 1: A Bachelor’s degree in public health, health education or promotion, communications/public relations, or an allied field; AND three (3) years of experience developing, managing, or consulting in health education or health promotion.
Option 2: Five (5) years of experience developing, managing, or consulting in health education or health promotion.
AND
Ability to speak, write, translate, and interpret in both English and Spanish. (The position supporting the Division of Environmental Public Health does not require a language other than English.)
Experience serving as a team or project lead for a project that included developing work plans, setting goals and direction for work, and coordinating work among a team.
Ability to prioritize competing demands, including working on different topic areas simultaneously.
Desired Qualifications
Master’s degree in public health, health education or promotion, public administration, communications/public relations, or an allied field.
Professional experience developing and editing content for the Web and social media.
Task and/or project management experience, including planning, coordinating, scheduling, and executing projects within the established scope, schedule, and quality objectives.
CHES (Certified Health Education Specialist) or MCHES (Master Certified Health Education Specialist) certification.
