Spotlight on COVID-19: An Interview with Shawn T. Moore, CHES®

"COVID-19 has presented a unique opportunity for health education. Now more than ever, people are aware of the need for preventative health and wellness. From the individual perspective to emergency health preparedness… this opportunity will allow for health educators to gain public trust and will fuel community efforts for positive change."

NCHEC: What is your current job title and where do you work?

Shawn: I am an Integrative Health Practitioner, and I own a wellness studio named The Well LLC in Irmo, SC.

NCHEC: What does your day look like as the owner of a wellness studio?

Shawn:  As a Medical Massage Practitioner, Registered Yoga Instructor (200 credit hours with Yoga Alliance), and a Certified Health Education Specialist, I offer clients comprehensive wellness plans with a holistic approach. Our “pre-COVID” services included American Heart Association CPR Classes, Yoga Classes, Chiropractic Care, Massage Services and Health Education Workshops.

NCHEC: How have these services changed as a result of COVID-19?

Shawn: As a result of COVID-19, the nature of our services has moved more into a clinical approach. Being integrative in practice allows me to assist our clients during this time of medical uncertainty while still allowing them to continue their mindfulness techniques to achieve wellness goals. This includes maintaining strict COVID-19 protocols and empowering clients with education to make healthy choices for their lives.

NCHEC: Do you think your role as a certified health education specialist and practitioner may be permanently altered due to this worldwide pandemic?

Shawn: I believe that answer is yes… but in a positive way. COVID-19 has presented a unique opportunity for health education. Now more than ever, people are aware of the need for preventative health and wellness. From the individual perspective to emergency health preparedness… this opportunity will allow for health educators to gain public trust and will fuel community efforts for positive change.

NCHEC: Do you feel that you have gained increased recognition for the critical role of health education specialists in public and community health?

I do. As South Carolina begins to reopen, many clients have addressed their comfort in knowing The Well is fully committed to their safety and care. The Well is committed to educating, inspiring and empowering individuals to lead healthier lifestyles while building stronger communities. I am proud that we have been able to continue that mission during this unprecedented time.
