The City of Brotherly Love was this year’s home to the American Public Health Association’s annual conference, the nation’s largest public health expo, where over 12,000 public health professionals convene, learn, and network with peers. This year's theme was "Creating the Healthiest Nation: For science. For action. For health," and was held at the Philadelphia Convention Center from November 3 – 5, 2019. As an organization, APHA identifies and shares innovative strategies to demonstrate how cooperation between organizations, governments, communities, public health disciplines and the public can improve health outcomes.
Because the convention was held within an hour of NCHEC’s home location, seven of NCHEC’s staff members were able to attend and help man the exhibit booth, assist with presentations, and meet with many of our CHES® and MCHES® from across the nation. Linda Lysoby, MCHES®, Executive Director, Melissa Opp, MCHES®, Deputy Executive Director, Cynthia Narh, MCHES®, Project Coordinator, Tanya Cole, Exam Coordinator, Melissa Schmell, Continuing Education Coordinator, Jessica Wessner, Communications Specialist, and Lisa Petrone, Financial Coordinator, all attended this year’s event. The weather was mild and cooperative for a November week in Philadelphia!
On November 4 several invited sessions were held by NCHEC BOC members and Division Board Directors, and included topics such as how to interpret the results of the Health Education Specialist Practice Analysis (HESPA II), curriculum mapping of health education programs in higher education, the construction of blueprints for NCHEC certification examinations, and trending topics in the Health Education Specialist workforce.
One additional highlight was the HESPA II celebration dinner, held at Maggiano’s Little Italy in downtown, where NCHEC board members and staff convened to discuss the successes of 2019 and look ahead toward the New Year and its fruitful opportunities for credentialed Health Education Specialists.
The NCHEC booth was a popular place for long-time credentialed CHES® and MCHES® as well as many excited folks who had just passed the October 2019 exam. We met with prospective health education graduates, university faculty, current practitioners, and providers of health education continuing education from across the country. We are excited to report that next year’s APHA annual conference will be held on the West Coast: San Francisco, CA! Start your plans early to attend this fantastic and positive event with us next October 24 – 28, 2020.
